LIFE ON A BUILDING SITE SO FAR...

As I mentioned, we are currently in the midst of having an extension built, and as promised I have been taking lots of pics to show you guys what's been going on... Just to give you an idea of why and what we are having done... We have been in our house for a little while now, and at first (as with most couples/families) it was perfect for just the 2 of us... 3 bedrooms, 1 for us, 1 for office and another as a spare room... well then, with the addition of Neve and Elliot, suddenly all spare everything went out the window. I was constantly designing 'hidden' storage anywhere and everywhere. Like most families these days, we were torn between the idea of moving or extending. We did have a little look around (as I do love a bit of a nose at properties) but we both decided our home had a lot more plus points then we had originally thought i.e location, garden, driveway (boring point I know but essential with kids!) and the huge potential to extend so.....here we are, and I'm loving every minute of it!

We are building to the side, out the back and up! This way we gain a bedroom/office out the front above a very organised (yet small) garage. We are loosing the wall between the lounge/dining room allowing the space to turn into a lounge/play area which will steadily adapt to our family and needs i.e the lounge gets bigger when the toys get fewer!!! Then comes the exciting bit, we are extending the kitchen to the side and back which gives us a fantastic space for kitchen and dining area with glazed walling to overlook the garden... then, above this room we will have our master bedroom. So the night before the big start date you can imagine, I was like a kid before Christmas.

Garage down...

The garage took seconds to come down, which made way for the first of many machines... and Neve and Elliot were quite happy with their new climbing frame aka half taken up deck!

With the garage down, the next bit was to dig some holes...some VERY big holes! Then once these holes were dug, we then had to fill them in with concrete... A LOT of concrete! Voila, our footings were in and we were ready for the building to begin.

Out the ground and going up fast!

Not quite 4 weeks in and we are sooooo getting there! Here you can see the work of our coffee loving brickies. We are now up to 1st floor level, ready for floor joists to go in, which then takes us to roof level. I can really see the space coming together... my brain is working overtime designing each room. The main area shown here is the downstairs kitchen/diner. The vertical steel in the corner links the full height windows/sliding doors, which will flood this room with light and give us the perfect outlook onto the garden (well when I get round to sorting the rest of the garden out). The corner of the existing house will be removed eventually (once everything is water tight) which will really open up the downstairs and give us the perfect living space.... can't wait!

Will be posting some more soon...
